Landscape

Plantation Point is a wave cut rock platform made up of Wandrawandian siltstone (ANCA 1995). To the west is the township of Vincentia, to the south-east is Nelsons Beach, then a number of rocky points before the small village of Hyams Beach.

Currents, Winds and Waves

Studies by Laxton & Laxton (1987b) indicate:

  • the effluent-seawater mixture formed a surface field and if the tide was high enough, this surface field was carried onto the rock platform by breaking waves. Diluted effluent would then drain from the rock platform back into the sea at points close to the sandy beaches on either side of Plantation Point.

  • if the tide was low and conditions calm, the effluent field would move around the down wind edge of the rock platform and, during onshore breezes, towards either of the beaches to the north or south of the point.

  • during offshore winds, the field would move eastwards. During onshore winds from the north or north-east the diluted effluent field moved parallel to the beach to the south of Plantation Point.

  • winds from the south to south-east moved the field parallel to the shore along the beach to the north of the point.
